The Paradox Hotel by Rob Hart

Available 2/22/22

This is a really intriguing and surprisingly funny look at time travel, grief, and capitalism. January Cole is the head security officer of the Paradox Hotel, a hotel for ultra wealthy, time traveling tourists. That’s right! Time travel! But, something bigger is going on. January is seeing more than the usual number of ghosts and dead body keeps appearing in a room that both exists and doesn’t exist. As the number of strange occurrences increases, the number of high level government officials also increases. With the U.S. government wanting to privatize time travel, the security of the timeline is at risk.

If this wasn’t enough, January possess a special ability that makes her uniquely qualified to solve the mysteries plaguing the hotel. But this ability is also ruining her life and making her job incredibly dangerous. How can January be trusted to protect the hotel when she can’t protect herself?

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a complicated mix of time travelling sci-fi, exploration of grief, and finding family in those around you. It’s also surprisingly funny at parts. When dealing with time travel, something wacky has to happen-like tiny dinosaurs that make their way to the future and are now running around a hotel. I really liked how the author combined January’s illness with how she processes her grief. When you can constantly see the ghost of someone you love, how are you ever expected to move on? There’s a diverse cast of characters, a real sense of found family, and an urgency to the story that really keeps the pages turning. Really loved this one, and it would be great for those that enjoy Blake Crouch novels.
