Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

GIDEON THE NINTH IS AMAZING!

That’s all you need to know. It’s incredible. It’s full of action, sword fighting, magic, spells, and hot necromancers. What more do you want?

Gideon the Ninth is packed full of action-I ended up with 18 page flags trying to keep track of who died, who is on what side, who is an enemy, what’s a cool new thing Harrow can do with bones…

The story felt very complicated and this was the first time I ever used the list of characters at the beginning of a book, and to refer to it over and over again, but none of that is a complaint. The most basic outline-Gideon is a servant for the NInth House and is tasked to be Harrowhark’s Cavalier. They are journeying to the First House (there’s nine houses) for Harrow to take in the trials to become a Lychtor. I took a Lychtor to mean super-badass-necromancer-magical-powerhouse. While at this crumbling and ancient castle at the First House, they meet the necromancer and cavalier from each of the other houses. Everyone is out to have their necromancer become lychtor.

There’s creepy priests, backstabbing, drama, lust, and the things people can do with bones! It’s amazing. Harrow and Gideon have this incredible snarky/love/hate/lusty relationship where the power dynamic between the two is always front and center. Gideon and Harrow wear this incredible make-up that mimics a skull and it’s the perfect cover shot-Harrow returns in book 2 and her cover is amazing as well.

It’s just so damn good. If you have any interest in lesbian necromancers in space, this is your book!
