Dark, gritty, and horrifying, The Monster of Elendhaven is an engrossing read that will cause you to sleep with the lights on.  It rides the line of excess and somehow creates sympathy for a dark and murderous creature who longs to know what he is.

In a dark and dying town, a creature comes from the ocean without a name or a memory.  Learning cruelty through lived experiences, it becomes obsessed with a wealthy single banker.  Realizing it is the first to notice that the mysterious man never pays for his goods, it suspects magic is at play.  When the monster, who chose the name Johann, approaches the man to learn his secrets, he becomes his servant instead.  Now Johann is a part of a larger and darker crime that has consequences for everyone in the city.

I finished The Monster of Elendhaven in one sitting and I could not pry myself away from this book.  It was so dark and brutal yet the writing was beautiful that it was somehow easier to read about Johann brutally attacking his victims.  It’s a slim book, only 159 pages in hardcover, but it packs a powerful punch. Highly recommend for those that loved Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children series and want something darker.  This is Jennifer Giesbrecht’s first book and I can’t wait to see what else she writes.

Loved it.
