What do you get when you combine Jack and the Beanstalk with Sleeping Beauty and throw in a twist?  You get an exciting adventure full of giants, secrets societies, and friendship.

When the Queen finally gives birth, it's not to one baby like the world believes, but two.  Briar, firstborn but scorned for her appearance is raised not as a princess, but as a friend to her beautiful sister Princess Rose.  Knowing the secret, the midwife Hilde does her best to bestow some of the magical gifts from the fairies to both girls but when the gray fairy curses the Princess to die on her 16th birthday from pricking a spinning wheel, Hilde is unsure which baby truly received the curse.

But there is more at stake than just a curse.  The kingdom is under constant attack by an angry giant who is slowly bleeding the kingdom dry.  Tired of the King allowing the giant to take the villager's food and money, the girls team up with Jack and the other village children to create a secret society of Giant Killers.  Will the children be able to defeat the giant before the curse strikes?  What is the meaning of true love?

I loved every page of this story.  Filled with action and adventure, each page gives us a new look at an old fairytale.  Taking on greed, bullying, prejudice, and relationships, this book is far more than just a fairytale retelling.   Geared towards 5th-7th grades, this book will be just as enjoyable for adults as it will be for the kids.
