This one is so good! So, so, so good. I tore through this book and could not put it down because I had to know what was going to happen to the characters. It combines two of my favorite bookish ideas: large companies ruling the world and climate apocalypse.
Cloud, the largest tech company in the United States has revolutionized the lives of everyone. Products are delivered nearly instantaneously via drones to homes across America allowing people everywhere to spend their time doing more important things. Employing millions of people, Cloud has created entire life/work housing units with restaurants, bars, health centers, and of course, nearly instant deliveries of goods bought online. Not only is Cloud leading the way in commerce, it’s leading the way in energy efficiency and creating long term solutions to climate change. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?
Now, we all know that a huge company will have some secrets it wants to keep. How can a company as large as Cloud track every employee? Through the Cloudband; a watch that tracks vital health information, location, and provides employees with updates and work information. It also allows entry to your apartment, elevator access, and important work related information. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?
Doesn’t it sound amazing to have your employer track your every. single. movement?
When Paxton’s company goes under, he is forced to work for the very company that destroyed his own. WIth few jobs available, Cloud is his best chance at a future.
Zinnia’s computer hacking skills are put to the ultimate test when she is sent to infiltrate Cloud. Her job is made nearly impossible when her new friendship with Paxton endangers the job.
As the dark secrets of life inside Cloud come to light, Zinnia and Paxton are put to the ultimate test of morals and ethics.
The Warehouse is both terrifying and enchanting. Imagine living in a world where you live and work in the same space, almost like a gigantic shopping mall attached to a hotel. Except the hotel rooms are cut in half and you don’t have your own bathroom. Also, Big Brother is watching your every move and your job is never secure. The Warehouse felt all too real and it’s easy to see how we’re currently on the path to make it a reality. How close we are to giving away all of our freedom in order to gain more convenience. How close we are to the tipping point of what our planet can handle and the chaos that is sure to ensue.
The story is very fast paced with interesting characters and incredibly detailed world building. If you’re looking for nightmares-definitely give this one a try.
