Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

I am slowly working my way through my unread Book of the Month selections. I am really good at getting very excited to receive them, but then I always seem to set them aside for a different title.  Once again, I let an amazing book slip through my fingers for weeks! Weeks! It sat there, with it’s super cute and colorful cover, on my bookshelf staring at me like I was a complete fool for not immediately picking it up.

I am a complete fool.

This book is even more wonderful and beautiful than any positive review could ever make it out to be.  It has humor, drama, royalty, politics, friendships, parties, glamour, EVERYTHING! I don’t think I’ve ever read as many passages out loud to my husband or laughed as much as I did during this book.  It’s an absolute gem and you must pick it up immediately.

Alex Claremont-Diaz is the FSOTUS and has lived a privileged and relatively charmed life.  Even though his politically powerful parents divorced when he was 12, they are still all very close, including his wealthy and brilliant step-father. One thing does keeps his life from being perfect-his archenemy Prince Henry of Wales.  He can’t stand him! He’s boring, prudish, spoiled, and must be the product of some serious inbreeding. When the two come face-to-face at the wedding of Prince Phillip, Henry’s older brother, they cause an international incident and ruin the wedding.  Now the two are forced to spend a weekend playing nice to keep the communications staff for both sides happy and to get the press of their backs.

At the end of the weekend, Alex begrudgingly admits Henry may not be so bad but they won’t be friends any time soon.  It’s only after a few text exchanges that the two find themselves talking everyday through emails, text messages, and eventually long, middle of the night phone calls.  When Henry makes his attraction to Alex known, Alex has to come to terms with his own attraction to Henry and what that means for his future. How do you have a relationship that’s not only long-distance, but  constantly in the public eye?

I loved this book! I stayed up WAY past my bedtime to finish it in one sitting and I have zero regrets.  It’s hilarious and witty and Henry and Alex are so prickly in the beginning and then they become perfect for eachother.  Alex’s family is so tight and I loved his relationship with his sister June. Along with the VP’s daughter Nora, they are known as the White House Trio and are incredibly close.  The way that they stick together, look out for each other, and just get each other was amazing to read. There is a lot of drama surrounding the Royal Family and with the recent-ish news of real-life royals Harry and Meghan, it seems to be very on the nose.  Both men have so much to lose in their careers and especially with Henry’s family. I found myself incredibly frustrated by the discussions of how they had to keep their relationship secret and how they could never have an HEA because PEOPLE ARE AWFUL! Ugh.

If you love your books full of wit, charm, glamour, snark, and everything wonderful, this is definitely for you.  I truly loved this contemporary romance and I cannot recommend it enough.

More from Casey Mcquiston:

It’s a debut! I am always in awe of people who can write such amazing books as their debut.

I’m trying to incorporate more romance books into my reading life and I’m horribly under-read in the LGBTQ+ genre. I’ve heard amazing things about Cat Sebastian and K.J. Charles but I haven’t gotten to read them yet. Here are some titles that have a similar comedic feel to them:
